Jupiter Bill Tournament Jan 15th and Jan 16th 2009
Report Date: January 18, 2009
The owner of the Fighting Lady Barry Gore his four sons (Donny,Tony,Russell and Steve) and my son Kip IV fished the 3rd annual Jupiter Billfish Tournament. The weather was cold as numerous cold fronts came through but the seas were not as rough as predicted. On Thursday I ran down to the Lake Worth pier to start the day. We had a south drift and were fishing live bait. We drifted down to the Ritz and had numerous bites kings and dolphins. We did manage to catch and release one sail. I then ran to Trumps and started there for the afternoon. We again had many bites kings and dolphin and again caught a release another sail and missed another. We went through 48 live baits and had to start trolling and 2pm. We trolled the last tow hours and lost two nice dolphin and caught several smaller ones. The end of day one we were 2 for three on sails had caught 6 dolphin 6 kings and a very large Cuda.
On Friday day two of the tournament, I decided not to run so far and started just north of the Breakers Hotel anticipating a southern drift. The wind was not as strong as predicted but was still out of the north with a tad of west in it.
Both days I fished in 113 feet of water to 120'.
I also brought an extra dozen live baits for a total of 60. We had a great day catching 8 of eleven bites on sails and should have been ten for eleven but that is fishing. Our first bite was early on and was a triple. We caught two out of the three. A little while longer we caught a double. I would drift from the Breakers down to Trumps and then run back up to the breakers. I did this all day The next two bites were singles. We then lost three in a row. We ended the day with a double just as the weather turned nasty. The temp dropped wind increased and the rain started. We ended the Tournament with ten fish for two days. We were the top boat on Friday with the most number of fish but unfortunately the tournament gives more points if the fish is caught on dead trolled bait. We were second overall on the total number of fish first was 12 with Ray Roucher. But again we finished 7th beacause of the point system. We still had a awe
